Future Leaders Program

The Board of Harbord Financial Services Limited, the governing body, behind Freshwater Community Bank® Branch, strongly believes in youth development and education. The Board envisage the Future Leaders Program to be an invaluable experience for selected students as part of their educational, social and community development.

As the program encourages independent thought, enthusiasm and initiative, it provides participants the opportunity to learn and develop skills for later life. As the previous years’ programs have shown, some of these participants may go on to be valuable members of the Boards of the future and integral members within their community.

In 2013 the Freshwater Community Bank® Branch Youth Observer Program has been renamed to the Future Leaders Program. Youth leadership is a key focus for Harbord Financial Services Limited and other Boards behind Community Bank® branches as part of the greater Bendigo Bank network.

Since 2010 we have successfully run the Future Leaders Program within our local community. Students in Year 11 from local high schools are invited to apply for the Program through their school Principal. They have the opportunity to have a say on local projects and issues and are also invited to present a project they would like to see initiated within the community.

This experience will give an invaluable insight into the running of a small public company, and learning about the different roles that comprise a working Board. Participation in business planning, sponsorship commitments, promotions, interstate conferences and community events, are some of the opportunities Future Leaders will experience in their time with Harbord Financial Services Ltd.

Each participant is encouraged to develop and implement a small sponsorship project throughout the year. This involves forming ideas of what area the individual would like to sponsor (e.g. education, sport, charity) and specifically what they would like to sponsor (e.g. Community garden, disability transport etc). Their idea is mentored, developed and refined and then a proposal is formulated and presented to the Board for approval or review. In every step of this process each Future Leader is given full support and encouragement from the Board of Directors and the Branch staff. This is a unique and rare opportunity for the individual to take initiative and demonstrate leadership.

Areas where Future Leaders will be involved in include:

  • Sponsorship and Promotions
  • Conferences
  • Sponsorship Committee Report
  • Marketing Development Report
  • Annual General Meeting planning
  • Sponsorship Event planning and participation
  • General Business of Harbord Financial Services Ltd
  • Agenda, Recording of Minutes during non-confidential sessions
